VIDEO | Dechkov: Social networks cause double victimization of victims of violence

Jasmina Dechkov, psychologist / Utrinski Vesnik

These days, the public witnessed a video posted on social networks about violence in the classroom, ie when a teacher at a school in Butel beat a student. In today's morning briefing, we talked with the psychologist Jasmina Dechkov about the consequences of such situations for children with additional bullying through social networks.

-Unfortunately, videos started appearing on social networks, but the public announcement itself will also have consequences for the child. Violence should not be present in the classroom, the role of the teacher is to raise and educate children. He is an example of how the student should behave further. Violence should not exist at all in school and there are other ways to address student misconduct. The child will certainly have emotional consequences. The whole situation with the social networks is an expansion of the trauma between the student and the teacher, says Dechkova for the Morning briefing.

She says that we do not know what the point was to publish the video on social networks. Cyber bullying means harassment through social networks and if that was the intention of the person who posted it, then it is cyber bullying. If not, then he should have reported to the school, because social networks are not a place where that violence should be promoted and people should be put in an additional awkward situation, says Dechkova for the Utrinski briefing.

Dechkova explained the practice of how to act in such a situation between teacher and student.

-The school principal can initiate a procedure against the teacher. But, an assessment should be made: what was the situation, whether it was his first time, how it happened and why, so the punishment for the teacher depends on that, says Dechkova.

The director convened an expert commission and nothing has been done yet, and the public expects a quick solution.

- That is the competence of the director. There should be a sanction for every perpetrator. There are pedagogical measures and counseling for students. That way, sanctions can be imposed on a teacher, she said.

There are also situations when a child behaves inappropriately and disrupts the class. If such a thing happened then why so far it has not been done to send the child to a psychologist or pedagogue as was the practice before.

- The responsibility is first with the teacher, then with the expert. According to the law, we consult with the parents, and if it is an extreme case with the professional services in the Ministry of Education and Science. Pedagogical measures are imposed. I say that there is always a reason why a child behaves inappropriately. Last year in our school we have workshops for cyber bullying and an expert who explained to the children what cyber bullying is and that it is not so simple to reduce it to a smile because it hurts someone, says Dechkova.

Cyber bullying is a complement to physical bullying. Are classmates and other observers accomplices in this case?

- The recording is submitted to the director who calls the appropriate services. It often happened that we had a problem with a student, but the principal is notified and then, if necessary, the Ministry of Interior, says Dechkova.

In any case, it is not a healthy environment when someone beats and someone sees it.

- It is not pleasant to fear that you may be beaten at school. It can cause children to not want to go to school, to have the urge to vomit. Every teacher should consider whether he can do that work with such students as they are today. Teachers often face bullying. But violence is not justified. "We need to work with the whole class to find out the reasons and find out the truth and see if some children have fear and anxiety," says Dechkova.

The teaching staff needs to adapt to the different attitudes of today's children. Education is in some constant reform. If we take into account all the factors, including the Internet, who is to blame, why do children show such behavior?

- It is a puzzle that we all need to enter to perform good generations. There is a parent-teacher-student triangle. Parents should not be opponents of the school, we are allies. Maybe the teachers are dissatisfied with the reforms, and the parents should work with the children because the teacher has lost the dignity and the children the respect for that profession, says Dechkov.

Can the old teaching staff be adapted to the new time?

- They are trying. Many things in everyday communication are distant to them. "But it is inevitable that they will have to adapt to the situation in order to produce healthy generations," she added.
