On Friday evening, the European Football Championship, which is held this year in Germany, officially began. The host was convincing against the Scottish national team with 5:1, justifying the favorite role. The two young stars of the German team, Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, were unstoppable for Scotland and in the first half the Germans took a convincing lead.

In the second match of this group, the Swiss triumphed over the Hungarian team with 3:1, in a match that was in doubt until the very end, when the Swiss footballer Brill Embolo scored in the third minute of stoppage time.

Group B started with the debacle of the Croatian national team, which was defeated 3:0 by Spain, who, although entering the match as slight favorites, showed excellent team play, although the Croatians also had several great opportunities. A controversial second-half refereeing decision was one of the most talked-about topics among fans after English referee Michael Oliver decided to disallow Croatia's penalty goal as VAR judges ruled that a penalty should not have been awarded.

In Group C, Slovenia pulled off the biggest surprise of the tournament so far, after managing to play an excellent second half against favorites Denmark. The match ended 1:1, although the Danes could have had a few goals advantage in the first half, but the excellent Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak did not allow himself to be defeated again. The Slovenians had a few chances in the second half through young hope Benjamin Seško, who hit the post from long range, but immediately after the corner they scored a wonderful goal.

In the most commented match of the championship so far, the English national team managed to defeat Serbia with a minimal score of 1:0, making England the first team in the championship to keep a clean sheet, i.e. Serbia became the first in this championship to fail to score a goal . Although the Serbs pressed the favored English team, the team led by coach Gareth Southgate managed to control the middle.

The footballer of Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham scored a goal with his head after Bukayo Saka's cross at the very start, after which the Serbian national team had the best chances. The English controlled the game until the very end, but the Serbian defense was up to par, especially in the fight against English captain Harry Kane, who they managed to keep relatively quiet.

In front of the English coach Southgate are several dilemmas and challenges that he will have to face in the upcoming matches. Some risky moves, like starting Marc Gueye in defense clearly paid off, but the English left side just didn't work. Southgate started the match with three right backs (Trent Alexander-Arnolds, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker), of which Trippier at left back and Alexander-Arnold in the middle. Trippier simply did not have the necessary contribution in the attack, which may have been a brake for the best footballer of the past year in the English Premier League, Phil Foden, who played on the left wing in last night's match, a position that he is familiar with in the shirt of Manchester City and in the national team, it was one of England's weak points.

But individual brilliance from Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka was enough for England to take all three points in their first game of the Championship.

The English did not show too much, whether it is also Southgate's tactics remains to be seen, but sometimes it is forgotten that not always the team that plays the most beautiful and quality football (at least to the eye) wins these championships. England remain one of the main favorites for the title, despite many saying they didn't show much against Serbia.
