In the election for the mayor of the city of Puerto López in Ecuador, the candidate Omar Menendez won, who was killed just a few hours before the opening of the polls.
Gunmen also broke into his party premises on Saturday and killed Menendez and another minor, the BBC reports.
Police in Porto Lopez said they were still investigating a possible motive for the attack.
A member of Menendez's party is expected to replace the murdered politician as mayor.
Menendez was not the only politician killed in the run-up to the election. Two weeks earlier, the mayoral candidate of the coastal city of Salinas, Julio Cesar Faracio, was also killed.
