VIDEO | Andonović: Putin and Trump's conversation - Will Europe be excluded from the peace agreement in Ukraine?

US President Donald Trump announced the immediate start of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine after what he called a "long and very productive" conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The news of the agreement caused a storm of reactions in the international community, and most of all shocked Ukraine's European allies.

In a post on his social network Truth Social, Trump noted that during the conversation, which lasted an hour and a half, he and Putin discussed Ukraine, the Middle East and cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence. The key point of the conversation was reaching a peace agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine, which, according to Trump, has already claimed millions of lives.

"We have agreed to begin negotiations immediately. Our teams will begin work, and the first step will be to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to brief him on the conversation," Trump said. He added that he had tasked a team led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and National Security Adviser Michael Walz to lead the negotiations.

Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed that the conversation lasted an hour and a half and that the two leaders agreed that a solution to the conflict is possible only through peaceful negotiations. He also noted that Putin invited Trump to Moscow to continue their talks, but this time in private.

After speaking with Putin, Trump also had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian leader described the conversation as "long and meaningful," stressing Ukraine's willingness to cooperate.

“Ukraine wants peace more than anyone. We are defining joint steps with America to stop Russian aggression and ensure lasting, secure peace,” Zelensky said. While maintaining a diplomatic tone, he made it clear that Ukraine will not give up on its key goals, including the return of territories lost since 2014.

Washington's decision to immediately begin negotiations with Russia and reduce support for Ukraine has caused concern among European allies. According to Politico, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth informed his counterparts in Brussels that Ukraine has no chance of returning Crimea and the eastern parts of the country.

His statement caused outrage among European diplomats. They demanded direct European participation in the negotiations, stressing that "there will be no just and lasting peace in Ukraine without the participation of Europeans."

The fact that Trump has decided not to include NATO in the peace negotiations process further complicates the situation. According to the Guardian, Trump's approach, which excludes NATO from the negotiations, could undermine the Alliance's credibility and weaken Europe's defense capabilities in the long term. Simply put, Trump's announcement could mean marginalizing Europe in the entire negotiation process, which, as the US president has announced, will begin very soon.

Trump's peace plan represents a tectonic shift in U.S. policy toward Ukraine that could redefine the global security architecture. On the other hand, it is a move that is consistent with what Trump announced before his inauguration – that he would work to end the war in Ukraine.

While supporters see the move as a pragmatic step towards ending the conflict, many European leaders and analysts are expressing concerns about possible premature concessions to Russia. The Guardian writes that, in addition to European allies, Trump’s willingness to engage in rapid negotiations and potential territorial concessions has also caused alarm in Kiev, with fears that such an approach could encourage further Russian demands, Western analysts say.

The US-Russia call and the upcoming summit in Saudi Arabia, which Trump said would happen soon, could be a hint that he is not only kicking Zelensky out of the deal, but also rejecting Europe.

As the world closely follows the news of the upcoming, long-awaited negotiations, it is clear that the stakes are high. The outcome will determine not only the future of Ukraine, but also the long-term relationship between the West and Russia, as well as a new chapter in global power politics, analysts say.
