VIDEO | Andonovic: Putin and Trump agreed to work on a quick ceasefire, but the war in Ukraine is intensifying

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone for more than two hours to end the war in Ukraine.

They agreed that peace talks regarding the Russia-Ukraine war should begin immediately, the White House said.

Putin accepted a proposal for Russia and Ukraine to stop targeting energy infrastructure for 30 days. After the conversation, he ordered the Russian military to cease attacks.

They agreed to create Russian and American expert groups to resolve the conflict in Ukraine on a bilateral basis.

"We agreed to an immediate ceasefire on all energy and infrastructure facilities, with the understanding that we will work quickly to achieve a complete ceasefire and, ultimately, end this very terrible war between Russia and Ukraine. This war would never have started if I were president," Trump said.

He added that he had a "very good and productive" conversation with Putin and that they discussed "many elements of the peace agreement, including the fact that thousands of soldiers are dying and that both President Putin and President Zelensky want it to end."

Putin informed Trump that Russia and Ukraine will exchange 175 prisoners today. As a gesture of goodwill, 23 seriously wounded Ukrainian soldiers who are being treated in Russian hospitals will be transferred.

They stressed the importance of stopping the spread of strategic nuclear weapons.

A few hours later, both sides registered attacks on their territory.

"Russia is attacking civilian infrastructure and people at this moment," Andriy Yermak, the Ukrainian president's chief of staff, said overnight on the Telegram communications platform.

Several Ukrainian sources reported that shortly after the Trump-Putin talks, Russia attacked energy infrastructure in the city of Slavyansk, which was left without electricity.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that regarding the modalities of strikes on energy facilities, Kiev would support such proposals, but that it was very important to know the details and what was actually being proposed.

Zelensky also noted that he expects to receive details about the negotiations from Trump, after which his team will prepare a full response.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian attacks, including the attack on the Sumy hospital and attacks on cities in the Donetsk region, reflect Moscow's true goals.

In a message posted on the Telegram channel, Zelensky said that Russia is using drones and other attacks on civilian infrastructure, while Ukraine's air defenses are trying to counter these attacks, Ukrinform reported.

He warned that these attacks are destroying Ukraine's energy system and the daily lives of citizens, stressing that Ukraine must continue to put pressure on Russia to achieve peace.

Zelensky also pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin had rejected the proposal for a complete ceasefire and called on the world to prevent all attempts by Moscow to prolong the war.

According to Zelensky, the international community's response should include sanctions on Russia, assistance to Ukraine, and strengthening allies in the free world, as well as working on security guarantees.

He stressed that the only real path to peace involves a genuine cessation of Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure.

It remains to be seen what the outcome of the meeting announced for March 23 in Saudi Arabia between representatives of Russia and the United States will be.

According to the announcements, they will discuss the details of the agreements reached following the talks between Presidents Putin and Trump.

After this meeting, it is increasingly certain that a meeting between Putin and Trump could happen soon.
