Although he initially promised not to, the president Joe Biden announced that the United States would still send more advanced missile systems to Ukraine to help it defend itself.

Biden says the missiles will help Ukrainians "more accurately target key battlefield targets."

"We quickly set out to send significant quantities of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine so that it can fight on the battlefield and be in the strongest possible position at the negotiating table," the New York Times wrote in an article in the New York Times today.

A senior Biden administration official said later in the day that the United States would provide Ukraine with the M142 (HIMARS) high-mobility anti-aircraft missile system, which would improve Kyiv's battlefield capabilities as it battles Russian invaders.

The new weapons will include the M142 high-velocity missile system (HIMARS), a senior White House official said - although he did not specify how many would be delivered. The systems can launch more precision-guided missiles at targets at a distance of 70 km (45 miles) - away from the artillery that Ukraine currently has. They are also believed to be more accurate than their Russian equivalents. Last month, the Ukrainian army chief said the acquisition of HIMARS units would be "crucial" to enable it to counter Russian missile strikes.

The United States expects Ukraine to deploy these systems in the eastern Donbas region, where fighting is most intense and could be used to strike Russian artillery units and forces targeting Ukrainian cities.

White House officials agreed to supply missiles to Ukraine only after receiving a promise from Zelensky that the weapons would not be used to strike targets in Russia.

"We will not send missile systems to Ukraine that could hit Russia," Biden said.

The latest missiles will be central to a $ 700 million support package for Ukraine.

Helicopters, anti-tank weapons, tactical vehicles and spare parts will be included in the 11th US-approved military aid package for Ukraine since the invasion began in February.

Russia has previously warned the United States that if it delivers such missile systems to Ukraine, it will face a backlash. Namely, Moscow fears that with this range of missiles, several Russian cities could easily be targeted.

No reaction so far, but it seems that the Kremlin's first move is the military maneuvers that the Russian nuclear forces have been holding since this morning in the province of Ivanovo, northeast of Moscow.

About 1.000 troops are training in intensive maneuvers, using more than 100 vehicles, including the Yars intercontinental ballistic missile launcher, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
