A Chinese navy ship blocked the path of the US destroyer, forcing it to slow down to avoid a collision.
The US military's Indo-Pacific Command said the Chinese vessel violated maritime rules for safe passage in international waters.
American media report that the Chinese ship did not attempt a similar maneuver when the Canadian frigate, which was sailing behind the American destroyer, passed.
