Britain imposes life sentence for drivers killed in car crash

In great Britain Next week, changes to the law come into force that provide for a driver who kills another person in a car accident could be sentenced to life in prison.

Amendments to the Law on Police, Crime, Penalties and Courts enter into force on 28 June.

It is envisaged that judges will be able to pronounce life sentences for dangerous drivers who killed someone in traffic and drivers who have done so under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The maximum sentence for those hiding a fatal car accident is currently 14 years.

The increase in fines will apply to offenses in England, Scotland and Wales, but not in Northern Ireland, which has special road safety laws.
