Public Prosecutor Ljupco Kocevski stated yesterday that in addition to the 16 people, another person will be ordered to be detained for 48 hours.
He announced a quick and efficient investigation that will be carried out in the most professional manner. According to him, this is a very difficult, complicated case in which there are many victims.
– I promised and I will keep that promise that the investigation will be quick and efficient. However, it does not mean that it will be rushed. All evidence must be collected legally, the evidence must have probative value, that is, it must be obtained in a legal manner, which means that the prosecution team is acting very cautiously and very carefully, Kocevski told Sitel television yesterday.
Among those detained who have been sentenced to 48 hours in custody are former Minister of Economy Kreshnik Bekteshi and former Director of the Market Inspectorate Goran Trajkovski.
The measure of short-term detention is proposed in particularly complex cases, when it is necessary to collect a larger volume of evidence for the examination of all circumstances and the eventual formal initiation of an investigation. This measure, provided for in Article 170 of the Criminal Procedure Code, can be determined a maximum of two times for 48 hours without a formal order for the conduct of an investigative procedure being issued.
This allows the public prosecutor to detain a person under suspicion for longer than the basic 24-hour police detention. The purpose of this legal provision is to allow the public prosecutor sufficient time, especially in difficult and complex cases, to undertake all activities and establish the facts and circumstances, as well as the specific characteristics and actions of the person to be examined further in the investigative procedure.
After the formal opening of the investigation, the public prosecutor proposes new measures to secure the suspect, i.e. short-term detention is abolished and regular detention is most often ordered.
