Vatican: The Holy See was saddened by certain scenes at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games
At the prestigious event where the whole world gathers around common values, there should be no allusions that mock the religious convictions of many people, the Vatican states.
The Vatican said it regretted the opening ceremony scene at the Paris Olympics, which was a parody of Leonardo da Vinci's painting The Last Supper.
"The Holy See was saddened by certain scenes at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris and cannot but join the voices that have been raised in recent days to condemn the insult done to many Christians and believers of other religions," states in the announcement, published in French, the British media reports.
At the prestigious event where the whole world gathers around common values, there should be no allusions that mock the religious convictions of many people, the Vatican stated and pointed out that freedom of expression, which is clearly not in question, finds its limit in respect to others.
One segment of the opening ceremony resembled a biblical scene of Jesus Christ and his apostles sharing the last meal before the crucifixion, but featured drag queens, a transgender model and a nude singer portraying the Greek god of wine, Dionysus.
Organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympics apologized two days later, saying it was never intended to disrespect any religious group.
