The Washington Post, one of the leading American daily newspapers, has canceled its subscription to its online content for readers from Russia and Ukraine, the publication said today.

The newspaper also opened its own channel on the Russian social network Telegram, where content from the live coverage of the war in Ukraine is shared, according to the Telegram channel of the publication.

Following Ukraine's invasion of Russia, several remaining independent media outlets were shut down and journalists working for those media outlets fled the country. Those who work are under strict military censorship. The war in Ukraine should not be called a war but a "special military operation", otherwise individuals and legal entities face draconian sentences of up to 15 years in prison.

Social networks, blogs and forums are under 24-hour surveillance by special services of the Russian security forces.
