Last night, the State Department pointed out that Greek sovereignty over the islands of Lesbos and Samos is not in question, and called on all countries, including "our allies" to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity and avoid actions that would create tensions.

The statement from spokesman Ned Price comes after Ankara sent a diplomatic note to the United States and Greece, because the latter deployed American military equipment to these islands, which are supposed to be demilitarized according to an international agreement.

When asked by a journalist how the US commented on that, Price indicated that "the governments themselves should be asked about the deployment of their defense equipment".

- We cannot speak about that. In general, and I said this yesterday, we continue to encourage our NATO partners, in this case Turkey and Greece, to work together to maintain peace and security in the region, and to resolve all differences through diplomatic channels. We call on all parties to refrain from rhetoric and avoid actions that could inflame tensions, he said.
