Washington would impose sanctions and potential military action against Russia if Putin does not agree to a peace deal with Ukraine, the US vice president has threatened.
US Vice President J.D. Vance said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that the United States will impose sanctions and potentially military action against Russia if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a peace deal with Ukraine that guarantees its independence in the long term.

"There are economic means of influence, there are, of course, military means of influence" that the United States could use against Putin, Vance said in the interview.
"President Trump can say, look, we don't want this, we may not like it, but we're willing to reconsider it as an option if the Russians are not good negotiating partners," explains J.D. Vance.
"Different formulations and configurations are possible, but we are concerned that Ukraine has sovereign independence," the US vice president stressed.
US President Donald Trump discussed the war separately with Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday. He also instructed US officials to begin talks to end the nearly three-year-old conflict.
"I think a deal will come out of this that will shock a lot of people," Vance said.
The vice president also said that Trump could reconsider depending on the progress of negotiations.
