Varhelj: EU members approve application of new methodology for Serbia-Montenegro
EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelj announced today that EU member states have approved the application of a new, revised methodology in accession talks with Serbia-Montenegro.
"I am very pleased that the member states have given the green light to apply our revised methodology in the EU enlargement process for Serbia-Montenegro, after both countries have accepted it." wrote Varhelj on Twitter.
Very pleased that Member States gave the green light to the application of our revised #EUenlargement methodology that #Serbia & #Montenegro, after both accepted it. Aim is to make process more credible, predictable, dynamic, with stronger political steer. Thanks also to @ 2021PortugalEU!

He added that the aim of the new methodology was to make "the process credible, predictable, dynamic and with strong political governance".
The new methodology, proposed at the end of 2019 by France to increase the efficiency of the process, is primarily intended for Macedonia and Albania, which have not yet opened negotiations with the EU for membership.
Serbia-Montenegro, negotiating with the EU, was able to choose whether to switch to the new methodology or not, after which both decided on a new regime.
