Vardar has become a landfill - it is muddy, dirty and full of garbage

When asked if the City of Skopje and public enterprises are planning any kind of cleaning of the garbage from the Vardar, collected on the pillars of the bridges, at the galleys and at the fountains in Vardar, they answer that the waste arrives from the populated areas along the river and it is impossible to clean it daily.

Vardar is muddy, dirty and full of garbage, that is what the residents of Skopje who are recreating by the river, but also the guests in the city, who are in large numbers especially during this period, notice every day. Plastic bottles, branches, towels and all other waste float along it, and large amounts of silt and deposits of mud and sand are deposited along the coast.

It is a terrible sight that I am faced with every day because I walk on the quay regularly. I don't know how the river is allowed to be in this state. This is the result of the landfills along the river, so we, the citizens, make the garbage. But where are the authorities to react, to control, to punish and that no negligent citizen or company owner would think of approaching the river, let alone throwing waste into it - responds a resident of Skopje with whom we spoke next to Vardar.

The situation is worsened by the facilities placed in the riverbed, the galleys and the fountains. The "floating" garbage remains on them, the fountains at Kameni Most are covered with branches and waste, but they are not in operation this year anyway.

When asked if the City of Skopje and public enterprises are planning any kind of cleaning of the garbage from the Vardar, collected on the pillars of the bridges, at the galleys and at the fountains in Vardar, they answer from there that the waste arrives from the populated areas along the course of the river and it is impossible to clean it every day.

From the first settlements along the Vrutok spring, large amounts of plastic garbage, rubble and bulky waste are continuously dumped, which, following the course of the Vardar, arrives in the city of Skopje, which is impossible to clean in Skopje on a daily basis. Years ago, neither the city nor the state level had the opportunity and resources for this type of daily cleaning because it is done with heavy machinery. The solution lies in the State Environmental Inspectorate, which needs to establish a system for detection and sanctioning of perpetrators of acts that threaten the environment and the health of citizens, which would permanently prevent this phenomenon and further prevent the same waste down the line of Vardar to continue to other settlements in Macedonia - say the City of Skopje.

Maybe the waste in the river cannot be cleaned daily, but certainly the city enterprises can arrange the slopes of the bed, because while the greenery of the quay is trimmed and mowed, the slopes of the bed are overgrown with grass. When they will be trimmed and mowed, we asked the authorities.

The minor bed is mowed several times a year, but attention is paid to the period and extent in order to protect the animal world - the City claims.

The mud and rubble from Vardar will be cleaned manually and by machine

The last information from PE "Parks and Greenery" about the arrangement, i.e. mowing of the green belt on the quay, is from a month ago, but then there was no information about the slopes of the riverbed.

The causes of the state in which the river is found are known. Why are the authorities in the state not doing anything, why are the wild dumps along the Vardar not being cleaned and why are the perpetrators not being punished?

The City of Skopje says that they take care to protect the wildlife in the river during mowing. It is good if something manages to survive in the polluted and dirty waters of Vardar.
