Hungary will not pay the price for the war in Ukraine, Sijarto said
The Hungarian government insists that the Hungarians will not pay the price of the war in Ukraine, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said last night Peter Sijarto.
Siarto told local media that the Hungarians were in no way to blame for the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, so if the European Commission intends to impose an embargo on Russian oil, it must guarantee that it will not affect the Hungarians or Hungarian energy security.
"If the oil embargo, which is part of the European Commission's sixth package of sanctions, is adopted at the moment, Hungary will not be able to get the crude oil it needs to sustain its economy," he said.
The government will accept the proposal only if "the EC offers a solution to the problem it has created," he said.
The first problem is that the Hungarian oil refineries will have to be technically modified, which will cost 500-550 million euros. If Hungary has to import crude oil from sources other than Russia, fuel prices will rise by 55 to 60 percent.
Siarto added that EU members agreed in Paris a few months ago that any step to reduce dependence on Russian energy would have to take into account the specific situation of each country.
