Hungary will not support von der Leyen's re-election, claims a Hungarian minister

For Hungary, all candidates for the top positions in the EU are acceptable, except for Ursula von der Leyen, and therefore will not support her re-election as president of the European Commission, said the Hungarian Minister for the EU, Janos Boka.

– The relationship between the president of the Commission and Hungary as a member state was less than ideal. For these reasons, it will be very difficult for us to support her for a second term, said Boca in an interview for "Poltico".

According to him, the other candidates for the top positions - the Portuguese Antonio Costa for the President of the European Council, the Maltese Roberta Mezzola for the President of the European Parliament and the Estonian Kaja Kalas for the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy and Security - are acceptable to Hungary.

He also stated that the Hungarian ruling party Fidesz has not yet decided which right-wing group it will join in the European Parliament, despite yesterday's meeting of the leader of the party and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán with his Italian counterpart and leader of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group.

- The elections in the EU showed that there is a need for a new political right, which is to the right of the European People's Party (EPP), said Boka.

According to him, the right wing in the European Parliament needs to be restructured, which would make it stronger.

- Fidesz has always been one of the poles in this political spectrum and it is very difficult to imagine this restructuring of the right without Fidesz, Boca added.
