Today, the Ukrainian army announced data on the latest Russian losses on the battlefield through a post on Facebook.

The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said eight additional Russian tanks were destroyed in one day, since the last operational update, bringing the total number of Russian tanks destroyed since the beginning of the invasion on February 24, 2022 to 3.197.

According to the General Staff, Russian forces also lost an additional 22 armored vehicles and seven artillery systems. They also state that Russian forces lost 650 soldiers during that period, bringing the number of Russians killed in Ukraine to 126.160, Ukraine claims.

The reported death toll of Russian and Ukrainian forces varies between Kyiv and Moscow, and figures have proven difficult to independently ascertain. The Russian Ministry of Defense does not regularly provide updated casualty figures. According to Russian state media, by the end of March 2022, 1.351 Russian soldiers had been killed in the first month of fighting in Ukraine.

Just days before this death toll was announced, NATO estimated it at between 7.000 and 15.000. The updated death toll presented by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on September 21, 2022 was 5.937 Russian soldiers. On the same day, the Ukrainian General Staff of the Armed Forces estimated the number of Russian casualties at around 55.000.

In early December, a joint report by the BBC's Russian service and the independent Russian newspaper Mediazon confirmed the deaths of 10.000 Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

"We only rely on confirmed reports of death, so the data collected does not reflect the true number of victims," the BBC wrote in releasing the figures. "We assume that our list contains at least 40-60% fewer names of the dead than were actually buried in Russia. By January 27, Mediazone confirmed 12.538 Russian victims.
