Ukraine showed off a modernized Leopard 1 tank
Ukraine has displayed its newly awarded Leopard 1A5V tanks, marking the first public demonstration of these modernized Cold War-era machines.
The upgraded tanks, now part of the 5th Separate Tank Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, were shown in photos and videos shared by the Ukrainian military.
Tanks are equipped with additional armor and protective screens to counter the growing threat of enemy drones on the battlefield.
Improvements include explosive reactive armor, which covers the entire frontal projection of the vehicle, including the lower frontal plate, turret and side fuselage.
The turret-hull connection, a vulnerable point, also received additional protection.
A key feature of the upgrade is a comprehensive mesh screen system, designed to reduce the effectiveness of enemy drones during combat.
This defense offers an additional layer of security for aircrews, who face increasing challenges from advanced unmanned aerial systems used by Russian forces.
Ukrainian soldiers have expressed a high opinion of the Leopard 1 tanks.
“The ideal war machine. An ideal machine to destroy the enemy,” they noted.
Known for its quality, stability and durability, the Leopard 1 has proven itself on the battlefield with its speed and accuracy.
It can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h and delivers a precision strike at a range of up to 4 km.
The Leopard 1, originally developed during the Cold War, is no longer in service with the German Army, but significant quantities of these tanks are available from partner country warehouses.
One challenge remains, however: securing ammunition for the tank's 105mm main gun, a problem that could complicate its continued use in modern combat.
