The candidate who will be elected will succeed the current rector, prof. Dr. Nikola Jankulovski from the Faculty of Medicine, who served as rector of the University of Skopje for two terms. Due to the Law on Higher Education, adopted in 2018, rector elections are being conducted for the first time in accordance with the new Law. Here is the Statute of UKIM, the amendments of which were voted in June 2018. According to these two documents, the rector's elections should be conducted. We convey some of the procedures that must be followed.

According to the Law on Higher Education (Article 97), the rector is the governing body, which represents and represents the university in the country and abroad. He is elected from among the full-time professors by publishing a public announcement, has a mandate of three years, with the right to one more election. The rector is elected in free, direct and secret elections by the members of the teaching-scientific, scientific and teaching councils of the units. The Senate establishes a University Election Commission (UCC) consisting of seven senators, which evaluates the fulfillment of the conditions for the election of the rector and the orderliness of the application, determines the list of candidates for the rector and summarizes the results of the voting for the election of the rector. Each candidate for rector can authorize observers of the work of the UIC.

The teaching-scientific, scientific or teaching council of the unit elects a five-member commission that conducts the voting of the university unit. Each candidate for rector can authorize observers of the voting process of each unit of the university. The number of votes won by each candidate in each unit is separately expressed as a percentage of the total number of valid votes of the unit and is multiplied by the number of senators elected by the unit. This is how the number of points won by each of the candidates is obtained.

In the Statute of UKIM it is written that the rector, as a rule, takes office at the beginning of the school year. On the day of the assumption of duty of the newly elected rector, the handing over of duty is performed in a solemn manner.
