UEFA: We have not allowed the "Great Hungary" flag at football matches
A big storm arose in the public after the news that UEFA allowed Hungary to display the symbols of "Greater Hungary" at national team matches.
The disputed flag, for which permission was sought, contains a map showing the territories of almost all the neighboring countries with which Hungary borders - a large part of Croatia, parts of Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine and Serbia.
Romania immediately protested and demanded an explanation for this scandalous decision. A great dust-up arose throughout the region, UEFA realized that the matter had gone too far and an immediate reaction followed. Namely, Nyon denies that they allowed the Hungarians to display the disputed flag. In the letter sent by UEFA General Secretary Theodor Theodoridis to the general secretary of the Hungarian FA, Marton Vagy, it is stated that Hungary will be fined if it displays the disputed symbols.
– We remind you of our previous correspondence of 20 March 2023 regarding the use of the flags/banners of "Historical Hungary" or "Greater Hungary" at UEFA competitions. We are surprised by the media's accusations that UEFA has allowed such banners/flags at the matches we organize - the UEFA statement said.
Nyon states that they have never approved flags or banners with political messages or disputed maps.
– At no stage has UEFA approved the use of any flags or banners with inappropriate messages. We warn that the use of such flags or banners is subject to disciplinary consequences which we will strictly apply. We warn the federations that any use of such flags or banners will be punished and most seriously recommend everyone to take the necessary measures to highlight the display of any questionable banners at matches - added the UEFA statement.
The announcement concludes that the "Disciplinary Commission of UEFA" is in charge of sanctioning such occurrences, which "will impose penalties in accordance with the regulations."
