Three signs that your intestines are sick - if you notice them, see a doctor

You are already aware that your intestines are one of the most powerful parts of your body. Experts often refer to the intestines as the "main portal" for nutrient intake.

It's vital to your overall well-being and research continues to reveal more ways in which our overall health is connected to the gut. But how can we know if our gut is healthy or not? The doctor Lauren Manaker talked about signs that gut health may be poor and when you should see a doctor.

You are constantly bloated

"While there are many reasons why you have bloating, an imbalance in the gut microbiome may be to blame," says Dr. Manaker.

It is common for people with bowel problems to have a higher risk of irritable bowel syndrome. One of the most common signs of irritable bowel syndrome is excessive bloating or abdominal pain.

You are tired all the time

"While we're still learning the exact relationship between fatigue and gut function, some evidence suggests that those who are constantly tired may have unhealthy guts," says Manaker, adding:

"Of course, it could be for other reasons, such as iron-deficiency anemia, stress, or simply not getting enough sleep.

Also, intestinal problems and imbalances can lead to interrupted sleep or the inability to fully rest.

You are constipated

Another way you can tell if your colon health is optimal is if you have regular, light stools. This shows that your digestion is on track and that your intestines are working well.

"People should have a bowel movement at least every three days, so if you're not experiencing it, your gut health could be to blame," says Dr. Manaker.
