Five people died and hundreds were injured in Iran after several earthquakes that half destroyed a village in the south of the country, not far from the Strait of Hormuz. Three earthquakes, two of which measured 6 and 5,7, struck Hormozgan province and reduced half of the village of Sayeh Hosh to rubble. The village is 100 kilometers southwest of the port of Bandar Abbas with about half a million inhabitants, which is located on the Strait of Hormuz.

"Five people died and 93 were wounded, seven of whom are in the hospital," is the last information that the spokesperson of the National Emergency Center, Mojataba Khaledi, told the television. The search and rescue operations are almost over, the Iranian Red Crescent announced, TV reports.

Several residential buildings collapsed in Sayeh Hosha and the village was left without electricity, as well as thirty surrounding villages. Historically important buildings were also affected, including 50 ancient mills, which were damaged by the earthquake on Qeshmo Island, a representative of the provincial heritage center said.

Located on the edge of several tectonic plates, Iran is a zone of strong seismic activity. In 2003, a magnitude 6,6 earthquake partially destroyed the southeastern city of Bam, killing at least 31.000 people.

The 7,4 magnitude earthquake that struck northern Iran in 1990 killed 40.000 people.
