Three years since the horror in Tetovo: 14 people died in the modular hospital

Today marks three years since the fire in the modular hospital in Tetovo in which 14 people lost their lives and a dozen people were injured. Of the 14 people who died as a result of the fire, 12 were hospitalized there as suffering from Covid-19, while two were family members of the patients.

The Basic Court of Tetovo has already conducted a trial in 2022 and 2023, and with the decision of the Court of Appeals, a repeated trial for some of the defendants should have started this year.

After the fire on September 8, 2021, an investigation began, which resulted in an indictment proposal to the Tetovo Basic Court on July 27, 2022. The first court hearing was scheduled for September 6, 2022, but after several delays, the process began on December 4, 2022.

After six months, on June 5, 2023, the Tetovo Basic Court sentenced Florin Besimi and Artan Etemi, directors of the Tetovo Clinical Hospital, to a suspended sentence for the crime of "serious crimes against general security", while the legal entity PHI Clinical Hospital was found guilty of the crime "causing public danger" in the trial after the fire in the modular hospital in Tetovo in 2021 when 14 people lost their lives.

The court then decided to acquit Dr. Boban Vucevski and Clinical Hospital for the crime of "failing to comply with health regulations".

On July 10, 2023, the basic public prosecutor's office in Tetovo filed an appeal against the first-instance verdict.

After this appeal, the Court of Appeal discussed in April 2024, and in doing so, it passed a decision ordering a retrial for the former directors of the Tetovo Hospital, Florin Besimi and Artan Etemi, as well as the Public Health Institution Clinical Hospital Tetovo as a legal entity. For doctor Boban Vucevski, the Court of Appeal rejected the appeal of the Prosecutor's Office and confirmed the first instance acquittal for him.

On June 26, 2024, the first hearing for the retrial of the two directors was scheduled, but it was postponed to September 25, 2024 due to the absence of representatives of the Tetovo Clinical Hospital.

In the initial verdict of June 5, 2023, the defendants Florin Besimi and Artan Etemi were sentenced to one year and six months in prison, a suspended sentence, and the prison sentence determined will not be carried out if the defendants do not serve each of them within a period of three years. commit a new crime. A legal entity had to pay a fine in the amount of one million denars, 30 days after the judgment became final.

On September 8, 2023, on the two-year anniversary, a public march and protest was held in front of the court in Tetovo organized by the families of 14 people who lost their lives in the fire in the Tetovo modular building. The families organized a public march and protest on September 15, 2023 in Skopje as well. The protest march started at Skanderbeg Square and ended in front of the Public Prosecutor's Office building.
