The former coach of the gymnastics national team of Brazil, Fernando de Carvalho Lopes was sentenced to exactly 109 years and eight months in prison for raping four athletes, including at least one person.

The largest prison sentence in the history of sports has been confirmed at the court in São Bernardo de Camp, in the region of São Paulo.

Carvalho Lopes announced an appeal right after the first-instance verdict, because he is considered innocent and that the whole case against him was set up to destroy his life, and his career, where he was considered one of the best Brazilian coaches, in sports in general, has already been destroyed.

Four years ago, 40 female athletes for TV channel "Globo" stated that they were victims of moral, physical and sexual abuse by the mentioned coach, after which the whole case was launched that shocked Brazil.

In 2015, it was written about the behavior of Carvalho, which cost him the participation of The Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with the Brazilian gymnastics team. Since 2019, he has been banned from participating in any sport for life.
