Tras criticized for her "growth plan": I should have prepared the ground better
British Prime Minister Liz Truss sought to reassure her party and the public today, saying she should have done more to better "prepare the ground" in an attempt to minimize the market reaction that saw the pound fall to a record low and the cost of government borrowing.
On the first day of her ruling Conservative Party's annual conference, Truss, who took charge of the party and government less than a month ago, struck a softer tone as she sought to reassure the public that she would be looked after during the tough winter and the period that follows.
But she stuck to her "growth plan", which has been criticized by investors and economists for billions of pounds of extra spending, offering little detail on how it will pay off in the short term.
– I understand their concern about what happened this week. I stand by the package we announced and I stand by the fact that we announced it quickly because we had to act, but I accept that we should have prepared the ground better - said Truss.
