Trump announces crackdown on illegal immigrants, day after inauguration

Donald Trump's administration plans to launch a major immigration raid in Chicago the day after he takes office, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing four people familiar with the plan.

The raid, which is expected to begin on Tuesday, will last a week, the American newspaper reports, adding that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement will send between 100 and 200 officers to carry out the operation.

The incoming administration's top border official, Tom Homan, said the action "will start right in Chicago, Illinois," the US newspaper reported.

And if the mayor of Chicago doesn't want to help, he can leave. "But if he's obstructing us, if he's knowingly harboring illegal immigrants, we'll prosecute him," Homan said.

Immigration was at the center of Trump's campaign ahead of the November 5 presidential election.

"From the moment of my inauguration, we will begin the largest domestic deportation operation in American history," Trump said in January 2024.
