Trump appoints former fast-food executive as ambassador to EU

The US president has appointed Andrew Puzder, the former CEO of fast food companies Hardee's and Carl's Jr., as US ambassador to the EU, while he has appointed the agent who was present during the attempted assassination of him in Pennsylvania in July as head of the Secret Service.

"Andy is a lawyer, businessman, economic commentator and best-selling author," Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

"In 2000, he was appointed CEO of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of the international fast food restaurant chains Carl's Jr and Hardee's. "During his 17 years at the helm of the company, Andy pulled the company out of a difficult financial situation and enabled it to survive," Trump added.

According to him, "Andy will do a great job representing our nation's interests in this important region." The new old American president has very difficult relations with the European Union, reports AFP.

"The EU is very bad for us. The Europeans treat us very badly, they don't accept our cars or our agricultural products. In fact, almost nothing. "So they'll be good for tariffs, just so (...) they'll get fair play," Trump said.

During his presidential campaign, Trump sharply criticized the trade deficit with the European Union and compared the 27-nation bloc to a “little China” that benefits from the world’s leading economic power. In his first term, Trump nominated Pazder to be labor secretary in 2017, but he was unable to even take office after resigning amid a series of scandals. His ex-wife accused him of domestic violence, but he later dropped the charges. He admitted to hiring an undocumented housekeeper.

He worked as a lawyer in the state of Missouri and is known as an opponent of abortion. His appointment must be confirmed by the Senate. Trump also appointed Sean Curran, an agent who was present at the assassination attempt on him in Pennsylvania in July, to head the Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting senior political figures in the United States.

"Sean is a great patriot who has protected my family for the past several years, which is why I trust him to lead the brave men and women of the Secret Service," the US president said on the Truth Social platform.

"He proved his courage when he risked his own life to save my life from an assassin's bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania," he added.

Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on July 13 when a gunman shot Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during a rally, wounding him in the ear, killing one of his supporters and wounding two others. The gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was shot dead by Secret Service agents shortly after opening fire from the roof of a nearby building.

The video and photos of Donald Trump, with blood streaming down his face and his fists raised, went viral around the world, and the event was considered a key moment in the presidential campaign. It also led to the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.
