Donald Trump, the newly elected American president, returns to the world stage today before the official inauguration. He will join Western leaders at the opening ceremony of the renovated Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

This beautiful medieval church burned down in a fire on April 15, 2019. Since then, the renovation and restoration process continues, and today it reopens to the public. Trump will join dozens of world leaders and foreign dignitaries at the cathedral's reopening ceremony.

It will be Trump's first trip abroad since winning the US presidential election a month ago. During his visit to Paris, he could offer French President Emmanuel Macron the opportunity to play the role of mediator between him and European countries, a role that the French leader had in some ways played during Trump's previous term.

The two presidents are expected to meet on the sidelines of Trump's visit. Although the agenda for the talks has not been made public, European leaders are concerned that Trump could withdraw US military aid to Ukraine at a key moment in the war with Russia.
