Dozens of people have died in the extreme heat that has hit Mexico in the past few weeks, the country's health ministry said, predicting even higher temperatures in the coming days.

Mexico is undergoing a high-pressure weather phenomenon known as a "heat dome" that has trapped warm air over much of the country, creating record temperatures that have exceeded 45 degrees Celsius in some places.

According to preliminary data shared by the Ministry of Health of Mexico, the great heat took the lives of 22 people between May 12 and 21.

The 10-day period overlapped with the second and third of five heat waves predicted by the weather service from March to July. The third heat is currently underway.
