Tetovo does not have enough pedestrian crossings or traffic signs – pedestrians are the most common victim in the chaos of the streets

Only last year, 4 pedestrians were killed on the roads of Tetovo, and over 100 were injured, a large number of them ended up with serious injuries.

The black statistics with dead and injured pedestrians in Tetovo is growing every year. Traffic signals that are either absent or improperly installed are one of the main reasons why pedestrians suffer.

According to the photos taken by Sloboden Pechat, it can be seen that even in the most frequented places there is no signaling, i.e. there are no signs and only remnants of marked pedestrian crossings.

From the Traffic Police, they say that their teams are constantly on the ground, but without proper signaling, traffic order cannot be established. The municipality turns a deaf ear to their requests to overcome the gaps. In order not to be damaged and stolen, the municipality placed some of the traffic signs at a higher point from the ground, contrary to traffic norms and rules.

"Our measures are continuous, we take measures on a daily basis, we continuously carry out action controls aimed at this offense, hold lessons, issue warrants and so on. It is a general conclusion that for these offenses we will need a general commitment of all social factors to reduce such phenomena. It goes without saying that the institutions also have responsibility, besides the police, which has the task of implementing such measures, there are other factors, the legal entities in charge of road maintenance, we have many unmarked intersections, many unmarked pedestrian crossings. Our job in addition to this is to alert and point out to the municipalities and after all and file reports if they do not act according to what they are in charge of, it seems that they do not have continuous access to the renewal of that signaling, as if they are waiting for us to let's remind them about their obligations, said Zorancho Talev, Commander of the PS for BPS Tetovo.

But the traffic culture is not at an enviable level, pedestrians also cross unmarked pedestrian crossings, for some the roadway and the sidewalk seem to be the same traffic infrastructure.

"In traffic, all participants and drivers have an obligation to pedestrians, as well as the pedestrians themselves. "Drivers should pay attention to pedestrians and reduce their speed in front of pedestrian crossings and intersections, and pedestrians should also use those crossings and pay attention to whether the vehicle will stop or not and so on, all in order to avoid consequences," said Zorancho. Talev – Commander of PS for BPS Tetovo.

The Traffic Police say that they will continue with intensified control activities, in order to establish a greater traffic culture among pedestrians with warnings, traffic lessons, and fines. From the Municipality of Tetovo, for the time being, there is no answer as to whether they plan to mark pedestrian crossings and place signage where there is none.
