Parliamentary Speaker Afrim Gashi met with the first Italian diplomat, Antonio Tajani. The meeting was also attended by deputies from the Assembly, members of the Parliamentary Group for cooperation with the Parliament of Italy.
"Gashi thanked for the significant support from Italy in the process of accession to the European Union. He emphasized that the two countries recently marked 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations and that our relations are traditionally good and friendly, with active political dialogue and dynamic sectoral cooperation," the statement from the Legislature states.
Tajani expressed strong support from Italy for the full membership of Macedonia, as well as other countries from the Western Balkans, in the European Union, after all chapters are closed. He said that he expects that process to end as quickly as possible, emphasizing the important role of parliaments.
"You as parliamentarians can start many initiatives and use your position to make your voice heard in other national parliaments and above all in the European Parliament, where the issue of enlargement and integration of the countries of the region is treated with special importance ", the head of the Italian diplomacy told the MPs.
"Gashi emphasized that North Macedonia and the region as a whole geographically belongs to Europe and that he hopes that it will very quickly and politically become part of the European Union. At the same time, the President of the Assembly emphasized that North Macedonia, on the way to achieving its strategic goals, showed a great capacity for dialogue and compromises, which should be an example for other aspirants for membership, how to overcome open issues and how to build good relations between neighbors.
