Saudi Arabia warned today of extremely high temperatures in Mecca, where more than a dozen heat-related deaths have been confirmed during the pilgrimage, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius.

The annual pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, is being held this year in the summer, when it is particularly hot in Saudi Arabia.

There were more than 2.700 cases of "heat exhaustion" yesterday alone, the Saudi Ministry of Health reported.

Temperatures in Mecca today, where pilgrims complete the Hajj, are expected to reach 49 degrees Celsius.

"Today, the holy places record the highest temperatures since the beginning of the Hajj and can reach up to 49 degrees. We advise God's guests not to expose themselves to the sun," the Ministry announced, as reported by state television.

The Saudi Meteorological Service announced on platform "X" that the temperature in Mecca reached 51,8 degrees.

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced yesterday that 14 Jordanian pilgrims died due to sunstroke caused by extreme heat, and 17 are missing.

Tehran announced that five Iranian pilgrims were killed, without specifying the cause of their deaths. Dakar reported that three Senegalese pilgrims had died.

This year's pilgrimage drew nearly 1,8 million people, of which 1,6 million came from abroad, Saudi authorities said.
