From Friday, water restrictions are being introduced in Catalonia due to months of drought and will affect 6,7 million people, or 80 percent of the region's population.

The spokeswoman for the Catalan administration, Patricia Plaha, said that for now it will not be necessary to limit the use of water in homes for washing, cooking or drinking, but that the government calls on citizens to use water more conscientiously and "be aware of the situation".

The measures will include the interruption of water for irrigation of agricultural crops and industry.

City dwellers will not be allowed to use potable water to wash the exterior of houses or cars or to fill swimming pools.

Fountains will stop working in more than 500 municipalities, including Barcelona, and washing the streets with drinking water will be prohibited.
