The drought is crushing them - Halkidiki has introduced a restriction on the water regime
Due to the prolonged drought, a water regime has been introduced in some places of Halkidiki. The authorities call on tourists and the local population to limit the use of water, reported the BNR correspondent from Greece.
A state of emergency has been declared in the municipality of Proponidas in Halkidiki due to a lack of water. Some of the best beaches of Halkidiki belong to the municipality, such as Kalikratia, Moudania, Triglia and others. Local authorities appealed to residents and tourists to limit the use of water. Due to the problem with water resources, many tourists from this region either leave early or transfer to other places in Halkidiki where there is no problem with water, say hoteliers from the area.
The mayor of the region, Manolis Karas, told the media that for now the state of emergency has been declared for one month, but it will probably be extended. In Halkidiki, water supplies are running low due to the drought this year and the overwhelming tourist season, local residents say. Farmers also reported problems due to lack of irrigation water.
