Although many know to say that "love is blind", a new study devoted to love relationships showed that the age difference of partners can play an important role in whether and how successful their relationship will be.

The actor Leonardo DiCaprio (48) is known for his choices when it comes to love partners, i.e. everyone knows that he prefers younger girls – not older than 25 years. On the other hand, there are men like the French president Emmanuel Macron, who is 45 years old and is married to the 70-year-old Brigitte Macron.

These two examples are proof that there are all kinds of couples among us and that people's preferences are diverse. But new research from Emory University in the US claims that the bigger the age difference between partners, the greater the chances of them breaking up.

The survey, which included 3.000 respondents, found that couples with a five-year age gap were 18 percent more likely to break up than those made up of partners of the same age. Interestingly, that number jumps to 39 percent for couples with a ten-year age gap. For those with a 20-year age gap, research predicts a 95 percent chance of breaking up.

So what would be the ideal age gap?

Scientists believe that couples with a difference of only one year, i.e. only three percent, have the least chance of breaking up.
