The Italian Coast Guard rescued 177 people, including 27 crew members, from a ferry that caught fire on its way from the Italian island of Lampedusa to the city of Porto Empedocle, in Sicily, the Italian authorities announced today.

Among the passengers on the ferry were also 83 migrants, who were transferred from Lampedusa, according to the announcement of the Coast Guard, reported by the British media.

During the rescue, the Coast Guard used water cannons to cool parts of the ferry affected by the fire, which broke out in the engine room late last night, the statement said.
