Serbia has already chosen the West, ties with Russia are getting weaker, says American Ambassador Hill

The American ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, assessed tonight that the country has already decided on the West and that, as he stated, Serbia's relationship with Russia is "weakening day by day".

Hill pointed out that it is important for Belgrade to constructively approach the plan for a European agreement with Pristina and that this will ultimately affect the speed with which Serbia approaches the West.

- Serbia has already decided to turn to the West, and I think that many Serbs find it frustrating that the process is taking so long, Hill told "N1" and expressed hope that the result of Belgrade's constructive behavior will be a much better and faster pace of European integration.

When asked why the European proposal was secret, he said he would not call it a secret, but something that falls within "traditional diplomatic channels".

"If you try to deal with diplomacy through the media, there will be a lot of misunderstandings," he said, adding that he therefore believes that such matters should be discussed exclusively at the table.

When asked if the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuќi., would cross the line if he were to reveal the content of the proposal at the upcoming parliamentary session, as was announced today, Hill replied that it was a hypothetical question, but that the matter certainly required a great deal of debate in parliament.

"I think it is appropriate that the plan be debated in parliament, but I leave it to others to decide what should be disclosed and what should not be disclosed," the ambassador said.

Hill, as stated by H1, also assessed that "Serbia has stuck to its policy of sanctions against Russia longer than the Russian army has kept Kherson."

- You can see how the issue of Serbia's relations with Russia is weakening day by day. It can be seen that the interest in cooperation with the EU and greater interest in cooperation with us is growing - Hill said.

He repeated Washington's position that Serbia should join the sanctions against Russia and added that it is not true that Serbia "did nothing", as the country condemns Russian aggression against Ukraine.

When asked if Belgrade's position in the negotiations with Pristina is weaker because Serbia did not impose sanctions on Russia, he said that he considers it a separate issue.

When asked who cooperates more, the Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti or President Vucic, the ambassador laughed.

"If I thought answering that question would help the negotiation process, I would answer it, but I'll leave that to your imagination," Hill said.

He also pointed out that the main issue for fulfilling the Brussels Agreement is the establishment of the Community of Serbian Municipalities (CMU).

"I think there's an urgent need for everyone to agree on that and understand that once you accept something, you have to move on," Hill said.

He did not want to comment on the documents leaked to the media, which were claimed to be the proposal to resolve the dispute, but indicated that the position of the international negotiators was "very well communicated both in Belgrade and Pristina".
