El Chapo's wife sentenced to three years in prison
The wife of Mexican drug lord El Chapo, Emma Coronel Ispuro, was sentenced today by a US federal court to three years in prison after admitting to being involved in the smuggling of the powerful Sinaloa cartel. writes CNN.
Prosecutors demanded four years in prison for her. Judge Rudolf Contreras said the 32-year-old Mexican-American was very young when she married El Chapo and had been cooperating with authorities since her arrest in February.
Emma Coronel was charged in June with involvement in drug trafficking, money laundering and transactions with a foreign drug dealer.
Former Miss and Influencer
The former miss, influencer and creator, has been accused of being a "mediator" between Joaquin Guzman of El Chapo and his associates in the administration of the Sinaloa cartel - one of the most powerful in the world when El Chapo was imprisoned in Mexico.
Emma Coronel's Ispuro married El Chapo in 2007, who is 32 years her senior and has twins. From the wedding to his arrest in February, she had multiple conscious benefits from her husband's drug trafficking, the indictment said.
She knew about importing huge quantities of drugs
She admitted knowing about importing at least 450 kilograms of cocaine, 90 kilograms of heroin, 45 kilograms of methamphetamine and 90 tons of marijuana to the United States.
Prosecutors say she helped El Chapo escape from a Mexican prison in 2015.
Joaquin Guzman was considered the most powerful drug dealer in the world until his arrest in 2016 and extradition to the United States in 2017.
In July 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison and serving a sentence in Colorado.
