"With us - not for us": Fair treatment and equal opportunities for people with Down syndrome
Under the motto "With us - not for us" Today is World Down Syndrome Day.
The Ministry of Health says that on this day we focus on the human rights-based approach to disability – the right to be treated fairly, to have the same opportunities and the freedom to make one's own choice.
Children with Down syndrome should have regular check-ups with their pediatrician or family doctor, as these individuals are more likely to develop certain diseases than the general population. Take them to regular hearing, vision and general health check-ups. Encourage them to be more physically active, the statement said.
For these people, it is recommended to visit a speech therapist for help with speaking, a physiotherapist – for help with walking, if they have reduced muscle tone, an optometrist and/or a hearing specialist – for help with sight and hearing, as well as to talk to the family doctor or pediatrician for information on how a child can receive these services.
