Skopje: How much do the mayoral candidates "weigh" against the parties?

Petrit Sarachini

It is impossible to have serious results in the election battle without party support. But it is also indisputable that apart from party support, another decisive factor is the quality of the candidate.

In these local elections, as well as in all elections over the years, the election battle for the City of Skopje is undoubtedly the most important, not only for local issues. In our country, it is almost impossible to have serious results in the election battle without party support. But it is also indisputable that apart from the party support, another decisive factor is the quality of the proposed candidate, and most of all the ability to win votes from the party undecided.

Well, let's see how much of the potential of Shilegov and Arsovska, as well as the other candidates running for mayor of Skopje supported by party and other coalitions, is due to the votes of members and supporters of the parties and initiatives and those who voted for councilor lists, and how much they themselves managed to attract votes outside the party campaign, supporters and voters of those options.

If this comparison is made, the highest score has the candidate of SDSM and the coalition Petre Shilegov. The list of SDSM for the Council of Skopje won 53.204 votes, while Shilegov 78.783, ie over 25 thousand more votes. A good part of those votes is probably due to the support of coalition partners that did not have a candidate for mayor, such as DUI which received 26.351 votes, and DPA with 679 votes and BESA with 2.303 votes, but it is also an indication that the candidate still was acceptable to that electorate as well, and probably to other voters from other parties or undecided, who apparently voted for Shilegov.

Danela Arsovska, who received the support of VMRO-DPMNE, won 86.698 votes, unlike the party and its coalition, which won 79.409 votes for the Skopje Council. The difference is over 7000 votes more Arsovska, but here it should be borne in mind that Arsovska also counted on the support of the coalition Alliance for Albanians - Alternative, which won 11.448 votes for the City Council. But, obviously, Arsovska was not as acceptable as Shilegov, for the voters of AA-A, despite the party directions to support her, and for other voters.

Left with the list of councilors in the City of Skopje won 20.333, and the candidate Petar Georgievski Kamikaza brought barely 300 more votes, ie 20.609 voters gave him confidence in the first round. Similarly, but slightly better is the independent candidate Ana Petrovska, compared to the list of the coalition she proposed. The list for the Council of "Green Human City" led by Dragana Velkovska, won 9.223 votes, while the candidate for mayor Ana Petrovska managed to win 9.954 votes, or over 700 votes more.

The worst candidate compared to the party list was the candidate for mayor proposed by DOM and LDP, Arben Shaqiri. The LDP / DOM Coalition "Determined for Change" with the candidate list for the Skopje Council won 9.287 votes, and its candidate Arben Shaqiri Beni won 8.911 votes, which is 370 votes less than the coalition proposed.

In the smaller parties, the candidates generally managed to mobilize more votes, but far from enough to be considered as any significant added value for the parties they nominated. Your party won 1.535, and its candidate Aleksandar Tortevski 2.669, or 1.100 more votes. The list of the Republic of Macedonia won 971 votes, and its candidate for mayor Vladimir Trajkovski 1.739 votes, about 750 more votes. BDS won 1.123 votes, and the candidate Munir Kolaшиinac over 500 votes more, ie 1.681.

Of those below and around 100 votes, Integra won 929, and their candidate, Dr. Todor Noshpal 1.332, or 400 votes more. Slave Nestorovski won 613 votes, 100 more than his with TMRO 514 votes. The list of Democrats won 397 votes, and their candidate for mayor Ljubomir Josifovski 439, or about 40 votes more.
