Every year, the citizens of Skopje throw more and more garbage

Last year, the citizens of Skopje dumped 158 tons of municipal waste, and for its collection, the teams of the PE "Communal Hygiene" made 476 tours, according to the annual report of the utility company. According to the data, the amount of household waste in Skopje has significantly increased compared to 25.

- During 2020, 158 tons of municipal waste were collected and transported from the area of ​​the City of Skopje and from the rural areas. 476 tours have been made. Compared to 25, when 306 2019 tons and 153 763 tours were collected, we record an increase in the collected waste by 24 069 tons, as well as the tours by 4 713 tours. From the total amount of collected and transported municipal waste for the period January - December 1, PE "Communal Hygiene" from the area of ​​the City of Skopje, ie the urban part collected and transported 237 tons with 2020 tours. The remaining 142 tons of municipal waste was collected and transported from rural areas, for which 338 tours were made - inform from the company.

The collection and transportation of municipal waste from rural areas in the vicinity of the City of Skopje covers 19.838 households from the settlements of the municipalities of Kisela Voda, Aerodrom, Gazi Baba, Butel, Karpos and Saraj.

When it comes to recycling, last year Skopje residents recycled very small amounts of total waste. According to the utility company, the reduced amount of recycled waste is due to the coronary crisis and the introduction of restrictive measures, because, as they say, recycling requires more workers, who would be in close contact at work.

- Last year there was an increase only in the collected quantities of glass by 146 080 kg compared to 2019 (2020 - 465 350 kg, 2019 - 319 270 kg). The total collected quantities of paper and cardboard packaging for the period January-December / 2020 decreased by 69 kilograms (298 - 2020 kilograms, 14 - 040 kilograms). We also see a decrease in the quantities of collected PET packaging, nylon and plastic. In 2019, 83 kilograms were collected and compared to 338, when 2020 kilograms were collected, we have a decrease of 4 kilograms - inform from there.

In addition to collecting the increased amount of household waste, the employees of this public enterprise also worked on cleaning the illegal landfills in all Skopje municipalities.

- PE "Communal Hygiene" in cooperation with the City of Skopje, during 2020, intervened in all municipalities on the territory of the City of Skopje and removed from the created illegal landfills 8 m181 of municipal waste mixed with construction debris. Compared to 3, when 2019 m8 were removed, there is a decrease of 721 m3 or 540 percent - stated in the annual report.

As informed by the PE "Communal Hygiene" last calendar year due to the declared pandemic as a consequence of the coronavirus, their workload increased significantly and their field teams performed disinfection of a large number of public areas.

- At the beginning of March 2020, PE "Communal Hygiene" started operating with doubled volume of activities, implementing a number of emergency measures and actions in order to maintain the highest possible level of hygiene and cleanliness of public areas in the city of Skopje. In the forthcoming period, our top priority will remain the protection of public health, and we will focus our daily activities on reducing the risk of spreading the covid-19 virus. Also in the PE "Communal Hygiene" there was a Crisis Staff from where the operational activities of the Enterprise were coordinated within the new situation related to the spread of the virus - say from the company.
