Russian officials and military bloggers reported that heavy fighting took place overnight in the key Zaporozhye region in southern Ukraine, the BBC reported.
They say Ukrainian troops are trying to advance south of the city of Orekhovo, where Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said yesterday that the enemy was on "active defense".
Several military experts said the Ukrainian military is likely to focus on Zaporozhye in an attempt to regain access to the Sea of Azov and divide occupying Russian forces in the region.
That would weaken their combat capabilities and eliminate the land bridge to Crimea, the southern Ukrainian peninsula illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.
