Siarto warns of pressure from migrants and urges NATO to guarantee Europe's security
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the pressure from migrants on the southern and southeastern borders of Europe is a security risk and that NATO should address those challenges.
"NATO must effectively address the challenges posed by the South and counter terrorism and migration if it is to be a guarantor of European security," the Hungarian Foreign Minister said today during the second day of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Riga.
He warned that "even larger masses of refugees could emerge on Hungary's southern border" coming through the Western Balkans.
Sijarto stressed that capabilities must be developed in southern European countries to address security challenges more effectively, and noted that Hungary has supported the efforts of Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia and Egypt to strengthen their state structures in the fight against terrorism.
- Terrorism causes waves of migration, and migration increases the possibility of carrying out terrorist attacks because terrorists can easily hide among refugees and reach remote parts of the world. We must avoid that scenario in Europe, said Siarto.
