Sweden is training with allied troops for the first time since becoming a member of NATO

For the first time since becoming a member of NATO, Sweden hosted allied troops for the annual BALTOPS training exercise.

American and Polish troops trained alongside Swedish soldiers on the island of Gotland.

"We have had foreign troops here, but this is the first time as a NATO member, in this case for BALTOPS 2024, that we have invited American troops as well as Polish troops to come and train, exercise and cooperate on Gotland." said Colonel Dan Rasmussen of the Gotland Regiment.

The BALTOPS exercise allows NATO allies to practice "collective deterrence and defense at sea".

The Baltic Sea region surrounding the Swedish island of Gotland is crucial for protection because of its trade and energy routes.
