Sweden and Finland are expected to apply for NATO membership today
Sweden and Finland are expected to jointly submit their applications for NATO membership today.
"In Sweden and Finland, we agree to go hand in hand with this whole process, and tomorrow we will submit requests," Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson told a news conference with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto in Stockholm last night.
The Finnish Parliament, by an overwhelming majority of more than 95 percent of the vote, voted in favor of joining NATO yesterday, allowing Helsinki to submit a formal membership application to the Alliance headquarters.
The same day, Swedish Foreign Minister Anne Linde signed her country's application for NATO membership.
Finland and Sweden have historically been neutral, but Russia's invasion of Ukraine has radically changed public opinion in both countries for joining the North Atlantic Alliance. With the exception of Turkey, other NATO members support the two countries' candidacies.
