Visit to Xi Jinping in Moscow comes at a time when China is taking an increasingly vocal position on the war in Ukraine. "BBC" writes about the role of other major geopolitical players in the conflict.

Allies of Russia: Iran delivered drones to Moscow which it uses against Ukraine. The former Soviet country Belarus it not only helped with weapons, but also opened its territory for Russian army units to cross into the north of Ukraine.

Allies of Ukraine: САД и great Britain provided the largest amount of military aid to Kiev's war effort – supplying weapons, training and financing. Poland provided weapons to its neighbor – including the latest decision to send four MiG-29 fighter jets – and encouraged its NATO allies to do the same.

Intermediaries: Turkey hosted the first ministerial-level meeting between Russia and Ukraine since the start of the war. It also played a major role in brokering the grain agreement. Израел helped keep communication channels open between Kyiv and Moscow. However, peace talks have been frozen without an agreement since September.

The governments of the United Kingdom and Ukraine have urged China's Xi Jinping to use his trip to Russia to end the war.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said Xi's trip was being "closely monitored" - and told various news agencies that his country expected the Chinese leader to use his "influence on Moscow to end the war of aggression against Ukraine".

A Downing Street spokesman said Xi should use his visit to encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to withdraw his troops from Ukraine and "stop the bombing of Ukrainian cities, hospitals, schools and stop some of these atrocities".

Earlier, Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said the issues raised in China's peace plan would be discussed during the negotiations, "one way or another."
