Steinmeier with an indirect message to those who have not yet been vaccinated against coronavirus
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier believes that freedom, trust and responsibility have taken on a new meaning in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the climate crisis, the DPA reported.
In Steinmeier's published Christmas speech, he will indirectly call on those who refuse to be vaccinated against coronavirus to reconsider their decision.
"The state can not put a mask on you, nor can you be vaccinated. "But each of us must do our duty," he said. "I am glad that the vast majority of people have recognized the potential of vaccination," he added. "It is true that in a democracy we cannot be of the same opinion. "But I urge you to remember this: we are one country."
He expressed confidence that the past 12 months have given hope, given the great solidarity with the victims of the floods and the work of those fighting the coronavirus.
In addition to the pandemic and the climate crisis, Steinmeier is concerned about the concentration of troops on the Russian-Ukrainian border.
"We are concerned about the news we hear from so many regions of our troubled world, and especially from Eastern Europe," he said.
