New leads in the investigation into the sabotage of the two Nord Stream gas pipelines, which connect Russia to Germany, lead to Ukraine, Spiegel reported.

The German weekly said the investigation is focused on the yacht Andromeda, which is believed to have been used to transport explosives used in the September 2022 sabotage in the Baltic Sea. Traces of an explosive, octogen, which was widely distributed both in the West and in the former Eastern bloc, were found on the yacht. Also, a message was sent electronically from the yacht to Ukraine.

On September 26, 2022, four major gas leaks, preceded by underwater explosions, were registered in the gas pipelines through which Europe is supplied with Russian gas.

Almost six months after the explosions, which affected the two gas pipelines, responsibility for the underwater attack remains a mystery, despite investigations being conducted in the countries of the region - Germany, Sweden and Denmark.

According to one of the versions, the yacht Andromeda left the North German port of Rostock on September 6, 2022. The yacht had a crew of six, including divers and a doctor.

Other German media, members of an international investigative consortium, investigated how the ship was chartered by a Polish company that was actually owned by Ukrainians.

Researchers are also looking for clues "in Ukrainian military circles," according to Zdeutsche Zeitung, R&D and We De Ar. According to them, one of the passengers on the yacht, who had a Romanian passport, is actually a Ukrainian citizen, who in the past served in an infantry unit.

Spiegel points out that "all these indications coincide with the assessments of several intelligence services, according to which the authors of the sabotage should be sought in Ukraine."

"The question arises whether this act was carried out by a commando unit that was not controlled, or by the Ukrainian secret services, and to what extent some elements of the Ukrainian government apparatus were familiar," the German weekly emphasizes.
