Spanish Catholic Church: 728 of our members sexually abused at least 927 minors between 1945 and 2022
The Spanish Catholic Church has announced that 728 of its members sexually abused at least 927 minors between 1945 and 2022.
That number is not final because the church's victim centers are still operating, the report said.
The newspaper El País reports that those figures refer only to cases of which the Church became aware after it opened offices to report abuse in 2019. The bishops still do not answer the questions about how many cases they were aware of before, the Spanish media write.
El País has been offering victims of sexual violence in the Catholic Church the opportunity to report it online since 2018, and since then 1.957 people have done so. The Church's report states that 99 percent of the perpetrators are men, as well as 82,62 percent of the victims.
Only one third of the perpetrators are still alive, and 80 percent of the cases occurred before 2000.
